SAS Performing Arts' 2023 Broadway Festival - A Sondheim Tribute Revue

Sunday, June 4, 2023 - 3:00pm
SAS Performing Arts' 2023 Broadway Festival is dedicated to this great American art form. A Sondheim Tribute Revue is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) on behalf of the Estate of Stephen Sondheim. This musical evening is a celebration of music and song written by the irreplaceable Stephen Sondheim, the only modern composer, playwright, and lyricist compared to William Shakespeare. Sondheim’s songs tell the stories of the human condition. His music is paradoxical, idiosyncratic, and never unbeautiful, changing musical theater forever. Stephen’s life ended this past November, at 92 years of age, but his music will never be forgotten. He composed and wrote lyrics for great musicals, including ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, FOLLIES, COMPANY, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, SWEENEY TODD, INTO THE WOODS, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, PASSION and ASSASSINS. His songs are inspiring, and often humorous. Something for everyone.
Tickets start at $15 -- use the code Broadway to receive 10% off your ticket!

The Spring Concert program includes classical masterpieces of Verdi and Mendelssohn, music of Copland and Sondheim, uplifting anthems of John Rutter, as well as contemporary settings of American folk music.
In addition to his leadership of the Fieldston Choral Society, Dr. Jin Byun has recently been named as the new Artistic Director and Conductor of the Oratorio Society of Queens, New York. New York Mandolin Orchestra - 96th Annual Spring Concert

Sunday, May 7, 2023 - 3:00pm
The New York Mandolin Orchestra will perform an interesting mix of classical and popular works composed by Telemann, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Handel, Jenkins, Rota, Waller, Li Jian, Gardel, Pixinguinha, and more.
First known as the New York Freiheit Mandolin Orchestra, the New
York Mandolin Orchestra was founded by Samuel Firstman and originally
affiliated with the Jewish Community newspaper “Freiheit.” Its members
were immigrant musicians from eastern Europe who brought their
instruments with them to the New World. A number of other mandolin
orchestras existed in New York in the 1920’s, many of them in connection
with labor unions. In all, seven other mandolin orchestras shared the
stage with the New York Mandolin Orchestra during the first half of the
20th Century. Their orientation was primarily classical mandolin music.
In the 1980s, as their members aged or moved from the
metropolitan area, these orchestras dwindled. Their remaining members
migrated to the NY Mandolin Orchestra, which continues to make music to
this day. The orchestra’s long performance history was interrupted only
in 2020, during the Covid pandemic, when live rehearsals were suspended
for that year and into 2021. Rehearsals resumed in the fall of 2021. Our
annual Spring Concerts were thrown off by three years during this time
due to the masking mandates and health concerns of the pandemic. Instead
of the 96th Spring Concert, we should be playing our 99th as our
centennial is next year.
As the New York Mandolin Orchestra prepares to enter its second century of music-making, its original concentration on classical music is changing. Recently, under the baton of Jeffrey Ellenberger, the orchestra’s repertoire was expanded to include bluegrass, choro, jazz, folk and ethnic music, and show tunes. Now, under the baton of Yuanlin Chen, the orchestra continues to work in these genres as well as classical music. Our music committee, headed by the orchestra’s concertmaster, works in conjunction with the conductor to promote musical diversity.
Admission to this concert is by $20 suggested donation.
Friends of Mozart - Chamber Music for Piano and Strings

Thursday, April 20, 2023 - 7:30pm
Chamber Music for Piano and Strings: Mozart, Beethoven, and Fanny Mendelssohn
Among the extensive chamber music cultivated by Mozart and Beethoven, the quartet setting for piano, violin, viola, and cello occupies a particular place in their careers. Mozart took up the form in the last decade of his life and the G minor quartet reflects the expressive quality associated with his use of that key. Beethoven's Piano Quartet in C major, notwithstanding being written during the composer's teenage years, demonstrates a remarkably assured handling of the texture for three string instruments and piano. Fanny Mendelssohn, the eldest sister to her brother Felix, was a gifted performer and composer. Born within Beethoven's lifetime, her Trio in D minor represents a pianistic virtuosity of a new age, and her last major composition. Pianist Max Pakhomov makes his debut with Friends of Mozart in this program.
The concert is free and open to the public.

Each is told with a distinctive musical and linguistic language — the tragic and veristic Il tabarro, the mystical and reflective Suor Angelica, and a masterful tale of comic retribution, Gianni Schicchi.

Encore: a free concert by SHE Women's Vocal Ensemble

Saturday, March 4, 2023 - 2:00pm
SHE, Women’s Vocal Ensemble, founded by biologist Sally G. Hoskins - and called by Time Out NY ca. 2000 “a small women’s acapella chorus with an altruistic heart” - first performed in summer 1998, with a free concert that included Set Me as a Seal, the René Clausen classic also included in today’s program. Every subsequent concert during our 1998-2005 run was also free and sponsored a charitable organization with donations accepted at intermission. In this way SHE met two goals: making high-quality choral music for women accessible to a broad audience for whom ticket prices are a barrier, and supporting the work of charities, including Dress for Success NY, God’s Love We Deliver, The Coalition for the Homeless, The Annie Tinker Association, The Stillbirth Society, and Doctors without Borders. Now retired, Hoskins was inspired to put on a new SHE concert when World Central Kitchen mobilized as the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.
The concert is free and open to the public, with donations being welcome. All funds raised will go directly to WCK.

The New York Virtuoso Singers - American Invention

Sunday, February 19, 2023 - 3:00pm
The New York Virtuoso Singers conducted by Harold Rosenbaum present American Invention, featuring vibrant American choral music from the 18th century to today. The concert will comprise a wide range of American works including world premieres by Pulitzer Prize winner Anthony Davis, Peter Zummo, Elena Ruehr, and William McClelland; New York premieres by Pulitzer Prize winner Tania León and David Patterson; music by other outstanding American composers, including Florence Price, Annea Lockwood, Jessie Montgomery, Mari Esabel Valverde, Nancy Wertsch, and Edie Hill, and 18th, 19th and 20th century choral works by William Billings, Lowell Mason, Charles Ives, Milton Babbitt, plus an arrangement by William Appling.
The program embraces the inventive and adventurous spirit that has been part of American music's DNA since William Billings, the country's first great native-born composer, published his first collection, "The New-England Psalm-Singer," in 1770. This spirit infused the pioneering work of Charles Ives, one of the towering figures of 20th century music, the innovations in electronic and serial music by Milton Babbitt, and the musical explorations by many of the contemporary composers on this program. At the same time, the works do not sacrifice feeling and beauty for mere originality, and there are many moving, joyful and uplifting compositions that will be performed.

The system of using sound vibrations to quiet the busy mind is called Nada (sound, tones or vibration) Yoga (union). It is a spiritual technique to turn your perception inwards to connect to your inner spirit. The goal is to use your “ear of the heart” to hear the sounds of your anahata nada, your own inner sound that is inaccessible to any other being. The human body is like a musical instrument, expressing countless frequencies in a constantly changing spectrum of life. It responds to sounds, thoughts, and speech through changes in heartbeat, breathing, and circulation of energy.
