Welcome!

The people of the parish of Christ & St. Stephen’s extend a very cordial welcome to you and hope you will feel at home here. As you look around our church, you will see that we represent a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We have members who are young and older, liberal and conservative, single and married, divorced and widowed, gay people, and families with children. We like to think that we mirror both the Upper West Side neighborhood where we live and the City we love. What we share is that we are searching for a more complete understanding of ourselves and our relationship to God. If you are looking for a community in which to explore your faith, in an atmosphere of diversity and tolerance, we invite you to join us and become part of our church.

Christ & St. Stephen’s is a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, which is part of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America, a province of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Indigenous provinces throughout the world connect more than 80 million people who share the worship and theology of the Anglican tradition. Beginning with the reform of the Church in England that took place in the 16thcentury, the Anglican tradition, unlike the continental reform of the same century, sought to maintain historic catholic principles of theology and worship while adopting certain reform beliefs.

Since the Episcopal Church’s faith and rituals blend both Catholic and Reformed traditions, people from many different Christian backgrounds find a comfortable home with us. All baptized Christians are invited to participate fully in our worship and to receive the sacraments.

Visitors are usually quick to notice that music is an important aspect of our worship at Christ & St. Stephen’s. Our Director of Music and Artist-in-Residence are assisted by our professional Choir and enthusiastic congregational singing.

In addition to our full, weekly schedule of worship, other activities you’ll find at Christ & St. Stephen’s include our church school, other activities for our youngest members, and numerous outreach activities,

Adult Christian Education, and many other activities and opportunities for service are available to all who wish to get involved and to put their faith in action.

Please join us for worship, fellowship, outreach and education. You'll receive a warm welcome from all of us at Christ & St. Stephen’s. We look forward to seeing you.

The worship of God is at the very heart of our life together...

Every Sunday we offer inspiring worship with beautiful sacred music. In all we do, we offer the best we have, we experience the mystery of God, hear and wrestle with God's word, share Christ's presence in the sacrament, and feel God's love in our community, and leave strengthened to live and serve in the world. Please join us for worship, fellowship, outreach and education. You'll receive a warm welcome from all of us at Christ & St. Stephen’s. We look forward to seeing you.

Make a Pledge

Stewardship is about being grateful, responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. The tradition of giving back to God and to the church comes from the Biblical practice of “tithing,” which means to give back a tenth of our earnings to God.

The Episcopal Church sees stewardship as more than simply contributing money to the church; it’s about reaching out to build relationships from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity.

Stewardship Keeps Our Doors Open!

Providing flowers for our Sunday worship is a way to remember a loved one, give thanks for a blessing, or honor someone important in your life. Make your flower dedication any Sunday except the Sundays in Lent (when we have no flowers in the church), the Christmas services or Easter Day. To secure a particular Sunday for your flower dedication, call the office at 212-787-2755 ext. 0 or send an e-mail request to Kristin at [email protected].

The standard donation is $45. Please send your check to the parish office (attention: Kristin) two weeks prior to the selected date including the dedication information for the Sunday bulletin.
