The Saint Stephen Window
in the north wall of the Narthex.
Stephen, the first Christian martyr, carries a palm, symbol of spiritual triumph, and is clad in red, the color of martyrdom. At the top of the window is a small dalmatic, vestment of a deacon, the role Stephen assumed after he was chosen to serve the first Christian community and thus relieve the twelve of mundane duties. Five stones studding the dalmatic represent his death by stoning after condemnation for blasphemy.
